Setting Goals for the Handling Task
From the ‘Patient Detail’ view go to the handling plan record you wish to edit and click on the ‘Goals’ button.
This will take you into the ‘Goals’ view ready to enter your assessor’s and your patient’s goals for the handling task.
At the top of the goal view is a title showing the patient their set of goals, and the specific handling task being addressed.
Then we have the patient’s information (date of birth, height range, BMI range, consent and capacity status).
Then a switch to flag the goal set as being completed.
Only activate this switch once you are sure that the goal set covers the key goals for the handling task and there is agreement among the team on them.
Below this there are text boxes where you can enter the goals. There are two different possible list of goals, one list for the wider team focused on those doing the assessment and the second has a focus on the patient.
The goals for a handling task are the reasons behind it. We don’t just move a patient for no reason, it focuses on achieving some other task/activity. So by understanding the goals behind an activity and it’s context, we can better focus on the most appropriate ways of doing it.
We should also recognise that different team members may have different ideas of what the goals should be and it is important to discuss this among the team to arrive at a consensus about the purpose of this handling task.
You will also note that the patient’s goals are separated from the assessors in the team. This is not to say that the patient (or their advocate) should not be seen as a member of the team (dependent on your organisation's protocols) but that by separating them the team can see them better and therefore places an emphasis on the patient’s voice - person-centred practice.
To enter a goal simply type it in the appropriate box. You will note that as you type in a box another button will appear under that box. In the image we can see the ‘Add Another Assessor Goal Statement’ button. This allows you to add extra goals and similar will occur when you are typing in the patients goals.
Once you have finished you click on the save button and the list will be saved.
If you wish to add extra goals later, start at 1. and when you enter the goal view you will see the goals you entered previously.
You should note that team members can enter comments on this view (discussed further in the comments section) and assessment tasks can also be entered (discussed in the task section).
A Note on Goals
Below are examples of the sort of goals that may be captured in the goal set.
